Engineering ManagerBooking.Com Oct 2017 - Jan 2021Manchester, United KingdomI was leading and mentoring a small team of developers working, using Kanban and Scrum, on a vertical slice of the website (choosing a car to rent). It was my first lead role and my focus was on getting the team to work collaboratively and be cross functional. They were a great team, so it's made things easier for me. -
Software DeveloperSainsbury'S Jul 2016 - Oct 2017Manchester, United KingdomI worked as a Java developer for the Manchester office of the Sainsbury’s D&T division.• For the first few weeks, I did some self paced learning to learn some skills that might be useful; such as Docker, Terraform, NodeJS and Scrum practices.• My first project was a scrum team writing a process workflow tool, with Scala backend and React/Redux frontend. I had to learn these for the project, but was happy to do so (I was a backend developer, but offered to learn the frontend as there was more of that to do.)I also did infrastructure work using terraform.• After 3 sprints, I was asked to lead the Manchester part of a cross-site project (based in London with 4 developers from Manchester). This project was Java (Spring boot) and I also learned Spock testing in Groovy for it and used my Scala knowledge to write Gatling tests.• After a few months, this team was restructured and a Scrum team was started in Manchester for a customer preferences web service. As well as using my Java knowledge for the REST backend, we wrote a reference UI using React/Redux and I was heavily involved in creating the infrastructure on AWS using Terraform.I was very active in the backlog refinement and planning sessions, I am usually the main person running the demos in sprint review and often the main technical contact for other parties, including presenting demos to the major stakeholder and interacting with other teams and departments. -
Consultant Software EngineerConvergys Feb 2013 - Jul 2016Voicemail Product (2013 – Present)• Working as senior developer in a team of 7 developers and 5 testers on a multi-million pound voicemail system.• As well as ensuring that this is a GA product, we have migrated a major overseas telephone network to it and are currently working on getting it ready for a major UK telephone network. Both of these customers have been very demanding in functionality and timescales.• This product is to run on a virtualised environment (VMWare and Virtualbox).• Individual guest servers are running on CentOS 6.7 which I am experienced in administering.• Using VoiceXML and SCXML for SIP telephony call-flows and these interact with Web Interfaces.• The Web interfaces use Tomcat 7 server for JSP (using JSTL tags) and Servlets.• Subversion is used for source control and JIRA is used for fault tracking.• Development environment uses Ant for building and Eclipse as an IDE. Also use JUnit for module testing and Vagrant/Packer for automated building of virtual machines.• Other technologies used on this project that i am experienced with are Spring framework, puppet configuration (including puppetdb) and ActiveMQ.• Automated testing of SIP call-flows is done using Citrus and Sipper (these are administered using Maven, so I am familiar with that as well).• LDAP authentication of Linux users using Apache Directory Server (including writing Interceptors in Java to enhance password validation)• We are gradually introducing processes from the Agile methodology (stand-up meetings, continuous integration). This has just started, but I am working hard to advocate this and introduce more processes.

Staff EngineerConvergys 2010 - 2013ManchesterOut-dial Manager Product (2012 - 2013)• Worked as the lone engineer on providing a system to allow a major overseas telephone network to initiate campaign out-dials.• Developed a web service on Tomcat using Apache CXF to allow the customer to initiate the campaigns (up to 2 million out-dials a day).• Used Sybase database for retry queues and then ported to PostgreSQL.• Status reporting between servers was done using ActiveMQ.Network IVR Project 2 (2010 - 2012)• Worked as Software Team Leader of a team of 5 engineers on a project for a major European telecoms network. As well as being an active developer, I was responsible for resource plans using Microsoft Project, ensuring timescales were met and that processes were followed.• The product was a framework to allow the customer to write VoiceXML and CCXML call-flows which could be executed on our platform.• These call-flows interface with JSP and Servlets running on Tomcat web server.• OA&M was developed using Jetspeed portlets.• Reporting was developed using BIRT reports.• This project pioneered the build tools and environments that are being used in current projects (e.g. Ant, Eclipse, CheckStyle, Emma, Subversion).
