Zhifei Zhang is working at the Department of Geology in Northwest University, Xi'an of China. His main teaching courses include Micropaleontology and Essentials of Palaeontology for undergraduates and graduates. At present, He is a voting member of the International Sub-commission on Cambrian Stratigraphy Working Group for Stage 3, and vice secretary general of Palaeontology Society of China. He has broad interests in collecting of Cambrian Burgess-Shale-type fossils. Now, He has a big collection of Early Cambrian soft-bodied fossils from the Chengjiang fauna and Guanshan fauna, as well as their associations from across eastern Yunnan to the Three Gorges area in southern China. In conjunction with the discovered Burgess Shale-Type fossils, he makes efforts in reconstruction of the scleritome (Body plans) of Small Shelly Fossils (SSFs) from the basal Cambrian. His current study is focused on exceptionally preserved brachiopods and other lophotrochozoan fossils, and their correlation in stratigraphy across the Cambrian paleocontinents. In addition, he is continuing to pursue his international cooperation on the deuterostomes including the oldest-known fishes Myllokunmingia and Haikouichthys from the Chengjiang fauna. He was awarded for National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of P. R. China in 2008, and was elected as New Century Excellent Talents in University of China and distinguished Paleontologists in the Palaeontology Society of China in 2011. Since the beginning of 2015, his research has been financially supported by the program of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).
