In 1974, my father started a small factory in Higashi-Osaka City, a town famous for manufacturing, where he dealt with electronic devices. I was always surrounded by industrial product parts and played with them as toys.After graduating from the College of Arts in Kyoto in 1994, I started to help my father's business. At that time, I rediscovered the beauty of industrial product parts and wondered if I could create something with them, which led to the start of MASSANOVAART.Since then, we have been transforming various materials into Robot motif works of art.Robot motif works of art processed from pen blank.We discovered "pen blank," a material used for the body of fountain pens and ballpoint pens, as one of our production materials and were fascinated by its potential, leading to the creation of new concept works.We do everything by hand, from cutting pen blanks, polishing work, drilling holes, and assembling the parts.All MASSANOVAART pieces are indeed one-off pieces.The starting point for Japanese monozukuri (manufacturing culture) is, without a doubt, its wide variety of industrial components. Here, these differentparts—screws, nuts and the like—have been brought together and transformed into accessories based on an adorable robot motif. High-precision processing techniques refined in the domain ofelectronic device manufacture have been put to use in handcrafting these 2cm-tall robots, which exploit the special characteristics of various materials including stainless steel, iron andglass. The parts that these robots are built out of are homogenous and inorganic-looking at first glance; yet a closer look reveals a mosaic of individuality, with each robot having a subtlydifferent expression. With their wry humor and cheery playfulness, these little works of art are sure to raise a smile from anyone seeing them. With so many different types on offer, justchoosing your favorite is an enjoyable task. A close look at the robots may perhaps reveal one of the components that we use in our everyday lives, repurposed here in some unexpected way.Perhaps the out-of-the-box thinking embodied in these toys will provide some hints or ideas for those who are seeking some inspiration of their own.
