There are a few things I had initiated at OgilvyOne Worldwide, Ogilvy & Mather Korea some of which have now become norms of the organization:- Data-driven digital marketing strategies & practices- Data-driven decision-making processes- Having people clearly define the languages they use at work and especially on briefs- Elimination of unprofitable accounts rigorously, not ruthlessly- Elimination of regular meetings with no specific aim- Allowing people to decide on their own when to come in and leave office- Allowing people to give orders to their leader when they need help from them - Enabling account executives/managers to act and be perceived as marketing strategy consultants rather than account slaves (so the highest complement from the client is "you don't look like an agency person") And finally, and most importantly...- Having people answer this question: "Would you do it if it were your money?"As a "leader" supposed to lead an organization, I'd define the word "leader" as follows:Someone who is able to...- come up with sound and data-driven strategies, and- turn them into actionable items, and- turn them into measurable goals, and- assist people to focus on achieving them, and- remove obstacles in the way of their achieving them, and- take full responsibilities and come up with solutions when things go wrong, and finally,- perceive and treat people as volunteers.As a business manager, I get excited not by external recognition and praise but by the occasions in which I can assure myself that what I do did contribute to expanding the business and thus creating opportunities for either more jobs or pay raises for people in good times, and defending the business and protect people from becoming redundant in bad times. People come first, client second, boss third and myself last - this is the only viable way I've learned to be the first within the organization.
