My name is Tom, better known these days as 10 Cent Tom. I have an intellectual impairment and was diagnosed with severe scoliosis at the age of 15. Due to this, I've had surgery to correct my spine and have two titanium rods running the length of my back- but I don't let anything stop me.
In 2020 in my final year of high school, I started collecting bottles and cans from around my neighbourhood. In the beginning, I loved being able to get to know my neighbours and make friends while earning a bit of pocket money.
However, I found that I absolutely loved the challenge, and adventurous aspects of collecting containers from my neighbours, so I decided to make it a business.
10 Cent Tom Limited is now a registered not for profit charity and my goal is to open my own 10 Cent Tom Recycling Depot on the Gold Coast employing people with disabilities, making an inclusive and equitable future for others with disabilities.
