2nd and Clay

2nd and Clay is an adaptive reuse project to bring life back to Waco's only church or Black history site on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1924 by a congregation started by a group of formerly enslaved Texans in 1874, the St. James building was purchased in 2016 after the congregation listed it for sale in 2015. The future 500-seat venue and restaurant is focused on preserving history adjacent to $700 million in downtown Waco riverfront development, which includes the new home of Baylor Basketball. We intend to complete restoration by 2024, which will be the 100th anniversary of the building and 150th anniversary of one of Waco's oldest congregations.
