We are pioneers of 3D printing in forensic science. Forensic 3D Imaging and Printing Ltd (3D.ip) was founded in 2020 from a mutual interest in 3D printing in forensic science. Our team have been researching 3D reconstruction methods and applications for over 10 years. Through 3D.ip we aim to make 3D printing more accessible to the criminal justice system in the UK (and beyond). We specialise in reconstructing skeletal models of human bones using medical imaging scan data, specifically computed tomography (CT) data. We are certified forensic specialists and we uniquely bring together 3D modelling expertise, forensic science knowledge, and streamlined forensic services. Research has shown that 3D printed replicas can help lay people to better understand forensic testimony - jurors can hold and touch the evidence. Using our core forensic science backgrounds, we aim to provide accurate and reliable 3D printed reconstructions for use in the criminal justice system. We aim to develop 3D prints that have transparent generation pathways, following best practices, and using peer-review to ensure the integrity of 3D prints. We have security policies in place to protect our work and can discuss any work in confidence. We have strong ethical values, you won’t see us posting any photos of human remains, and we also consider the ethical implications or our work.
