Achieving the European Union Green Deal objectives requires the development of efficient European railway transport for both passengers and freight. This will be reliant on the successful digitalisation of the European railway transport, for which the 5G FRMCS (Future Railways Mobile Communication System – the GSM-R successor) technology will be an enabler.
This 30-month H2020 EU-funded Project officially started on 1 November 2020. It consists of 8 Work Packages, which aim to validate the first FRMCS specifications by developing and testing prototypes for the FRMCS ecosystem for both trackside infrastructure and on-board use.
UIC as 5GRAIL Project Coordinator will manage a consortium composed of UNIFE (representing the European rail supply industry), European Railways – DB Netz, SNCF Réseau, SBB, OBB and IP, European rail suppliers – Nokia, Kontron, Alstom, Thales, Siemens, CAF and Teleste – and Research Centres/Universities – IFSTTAR & Gustave Eiffel from France and DTU from Denmark.
