5 Mailay aur unkay Thailay (5 Mailay for short) is a civic initiative based in Islamabad, Pakistan, founded by a group of citizens who decided to take trash into their own hands — literally. Our mission is to reclaim public spaces, reduce litter, and shift cultural attitudes around waste and civic responsibility through regular community clean-up (safai) drives and public advocacy. Since our founding in 2018, we’ve led over 40 cleanup operations across Islamabad, collecting and properly disposing of more than 2,000 kg of trash — all through volunteer effort. After a brief hiatus, we relaunched our mission in late 2024 and now host biweekly safai drives every other Sunday in partnership with the local community and sanitation departments. We engage not only in action, but also in awareness: advocating for responsible waste disposal, plastic reduction, and environmental education — especially among youth. Our work is entirely volunteer-led and self-funded, and we are currently expanding efforts in school outreach, civic initiative development, and sustainable partnerships.
