In terms of tangible benefits for deep cleaning, there are a number. Managing contamination in a Data Centre is key as OEM warranties have actually been deemed void as the kit has not been housed in a “suitably maintained environment”. Recently, OEM’s have started sending out loss adjusters to audit their client’s Data Centre environment before they send out new kit which has gone faulty within its warranty period. OEM’s such as HP and EMC for example have also released Site Planning Guides to back this up as they stipulate that the environment where the equipment is kept needs to be as contamination free as possible. HP actually state in their Site Planning Guide that they; “Strongly recommend that your site be evaluated for metallic particulate contamination before installation”.
Contamination also affects power and cooling (and therefore PUE) as it gets pulled into a Server’s fan through the air flow. This then starts to block the air and so then the server needs to draw more power to keep it cool.
And then there is the issue of downtime, following on from the above. Making sure kit doesn't "fall over" is something that companies spend a lot of time, effort and money in. Relatively, the costs of managing contamination are minimal next to costs of N + 1 etc.
Finally, there is the issue of ISO standards and then also audits. Machine Rooms have to follow ISO ruling 14644-1. The OEM’s are also using this ruling to deem warranties void. We provide environmental sampling and test certification which will prove the class/standard that any Data Centre has achieved.
