African American Home Movie Archive

Created in mid-2014, the African American Home Movie Archive introduced the Black Home Movie Index as an online repository catering to researchers, educators, students, library professionals, and others interested in viewing and researching African American home movies. This comprehensive index includes collection details, scope, dates, links to finding aids, streaming options (when available), and contact information for participating institutions. Serving as a vital liaison for African American home movie research, the virtual archive aims to streamline access to this valuable information. Beyond the Black Home Movie Index, AAHMA curates and digitizes its own expanding collection of Black amateur films and home movies; demonstrating its ongoing commitment to counteracting the historical underrepresentation and misrepresentation of African Americans in mainstream media through preservation and access. In recent years, AAHMA has licensed archival footage to PBS, HBO, MGM, Netflix, and many more.
