African Caribbean Achievement Project (ACAP)

ACAP is a volunteer led Charity which was established in 1995 in order to raise the educational achievement and welfare of disadvantaged people from the West Yorkshire area of the UK. The Charity was started in response to the high levels of Black children who were failing educationally at Primary and Secondary schools and set out on a mission to work with schools to address these problems. We have provided mentoring and other packages to schools in Bradford and the surrounding areas and have positively mentored and changed the lives of thousands of young people. Over the last few years our vision has been to enable young people to achieve outstanding success in every aspect of their lives in order that they can contribute positively and significantly to society as a whole. Our project has evolved to include working with young people from all sections of the community from different backgrounds and is inclusive in its approach. ACAP recruits, trains and deploys adult volunteers (role models) from the local community to mentor disadvantaged young people. We provide a variety of other services including a drop-in advice service, homework support, holiday play schemes, library project, therapeutic arts and crafts, an eco-upcycling project, a women’s cycling for health project and a well-established volunteering programme for adults. We also organise a range of cultural events throughout the year which are designed to bring different ethnic communities and groups together to aid social cohesion.
