Accessible SmartTech Research Group

The Accessible SmartTech Research Group is committed to transforming smart technology to enhance accessibility for individuals with disabilities. We focus on innovative solutions, from smartphones and smart home devices to wearables and assistive robotics that use sensors, software, and connectivity to adapt and respond intelligently. Our mission involves not only developing new technologies but also customizing existing systems to meet diverse user needs and actively exploring funding and policy initiatives to improve access and ensure sustainability of these tech solutions. Through rigorous assessment and tailored adaptations, we ensure these tools align with individual abilities and provide meaningful and practical support. We also develop and evaluate training programs that empower people to maximize the benefits of smart technology in daily life. Our work, supported by the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Wireless Technology (Wireless RERC), the SmartTech Hub for Paralysis Care (ST4P), and a number of research grants, promotes inclusivity, independence, and improved quality of life. Together, we aim to make technology more adaptive, inclusive, and impactful for all.
