Sound moves in waves through the air. When it hits absorbent surfaces, it is downsized and becomes softer. Smooth hard surfaces such as walls or hard floors reflect sound, so it hardly diminishes in strength and will reverberate. This will result into a cold, uninviting atmosphere and can cause restlessness, irritation and possibly even health problems.
