Acoustimetrics was founded in July 2002 to build and market the first commercially-available acoustic recording tag for marine wildlife, the Bioacoustic Probe™. During 2006-2009, with the support of the United States Office of Naval Research, it developed its flagship product, the Acousonde™.
A miniature but powerful acoustic and kinematic recorder, the Acousonde supports a wide variety of marine applications, including underwater glider acoustics and protected species research. Between 2009 and 2020, Acoustimetrics produced 110 Acousonde units for 34 different investigators at 27 institutions in 8 countries, and, within the United States, 10 states. Researchers have deployed Acousondes in oceans off all seven continents, from Antarctica to Alaska and from Hokkaido to Madagascar.
Acoustimetrics reorganized in May 2023, and is now managed entirely and independently by its original design personnel.
