Founded in 2018, Active Geelong is a not-for-profit community of dedicated specialists collaborating to inspire pro-active enjoyment of life, through easy access to physical activity, for everybody, every day.
We are a collective impact initiative created to support, coordinate and promote physical activity initiatives in the Geelong region and our vision is for Geelong to be recognised as one of Australia’s leaders in active and healthy communities.
Research reveals that 54% of Greater Geelong adults do not meet current physical activity guidelines of participating in at least 30-60 minutes of physical activity on at least 5 days of the week. The impact of this physical inactivity is real, with 10% of premature deaths attributable to physical inactivity.
Our goal is to combat these statistics and make Geelong Australia’s most active city by 2029. Geelong is ideally placed to be Australia’s most active city thanks to the environment, weather, infrastructure and access to world leaders in physical activity research.
In order to reach this goal, we have identified a number of short-term goals we will need to achieve along the way. By 2022, we want Australia’s most active workplaces and most actively committed GPs to be in Geelong. While, by 2025, we want to ensure every person in Geelong gets their minimum daily dose of activity every day.
These long- and short-term goals will be achieved through Active Geelong working with workplaces, local GPs and health professionals and the broader community. This collaborative and wide-reaching approach will allow us to increase physical activity in the Geelong regions through innovative ways that will increase access, provide new opportunities and support activities that promote physical activity.
