During projects, turnarounds, outages, etc., there is an increase in elevated work performed; often thousands of man hours. With the majority performed at elevation, there is an increased chance for dropped objects.
Depending on the facility and its incident history, companies may be required to submit a falling/dropped objects prevention plan. These plans often include tool lanyards, temporary barricades, and mesh netting placed between the handrail gaps.
When companies install their mesh netting, they typically use a temporary orange netting that is not FR or UV resistant. Companies install the netting only for the life of their work then they remove it. Resulting in facilities paying for material cost, installation & removal labor yet they have nothing to show for it. Zip-ties or tie-wire is commonly used to secure this netting. These products create sharp and pointy edges that often result in first aid, recordable and lost time injuries. In addition, their netting is strung up by running the zip-tie or tie-wire through the mesh which reduces the nets integrity.
