About The Adaptive Climbing Group

Adaptive Climbing Group creates accessible and affordable opportunities for people with disabilities in the sport of climbing through year round session in gym facilities, outdoor settings and competitions. This is not just and organization but a community for people with disabilities to have the opportunity to inclusively participate in the sport of climbing. Adaptive Climbing is taking the already existing ability of a person and and giving them an inclusive participation in the sport of climbing. From the idea of Kareemah Batts inspired by her climbing experience in the United States post amputation, led to the first "NYC Adaptive Climbing Clinic" held on March 15, 2012 at Brooklyn Boulders gym. 38 disabled individuals were introduced to climbing as an accessible sport over 2 days. That 2 day "NYC Adaptive Climbing Clinic" that resulted into a meetup, evolved into a club, and then a program and an exponentially alarming speed. In that growth and our initiative for accessible climbing we made many friends, partnerships and have hosted hundreds of clinics in under 2 years in and outside our home base of Brooklyn, NY. For that we have changed from being known as NYC Adaptive Climbing to Adaptive Climbing Group. Our governing board is a diverse group of climbers both disabled and non disabled that come from all along the eastern seaboard that are leaders and contributors in the adaptive climbing movement. As of 2015 we now have sites in Massachusetts, Illinois, and New York. Now hundreds of participants later Adaptive Climbing Group continues to spread the message that "anyone can climb" through Thursday and Sunday sessions at Brooklyn Boulders in New York, hosting adaptive climbing clinics indoor and outdoor in the North east.
