AFS is a non-profit organization without political or religious affiliation. The ambulance drivers who started AFS as an ambulance corps after the First World War, were both volunteers and worked for free. They laid the foundation for the organization, which today is the world's oldest and largest exchange organization. About 60,000 volunteers from 1500 local networks in the world believe in the same idea and have each given their time and energy getting involved in our activities in various ways. Together, we handle approximately 17,000 exchange students each year. Working for peace is our main goal, and our fundamental idea is that we can build bridges between cultures by using our tools; acceptance, understanding and knowledge of other cultures.
