In Ghana, over 70% of the agricultural workforce are smallholder farmers. And yet, only 13% of cultivated land is irrigated, leaving most farmers vulnerable to climate shocks like drought and unreliable rainfall. Irrigation is vital at the early stages of crop development and the absence of it destroys farms, decreases yield output and traps farmers in poverty. For farmers who pursue manual irrigation, high diesel costs and the labor intensity of mañual irrigation further limit their ability to farm year-round, resulting in low yields, food insecurity, and stagnant income. Agrio provides solar irrigation pumps (SIPs) and sustainable land-and-water use advisory for smallholder farmers (SHFs). Agrio purchases and rents SIPs on a metered pay-per-use basis to SHFs with no need for upfront cost or reliance on fossil fuel like diesel pumps - making it well suited for rural settings. By promoting widespread adoption of SIPs, Agrio increases farmer yield, transform livelihoods and promotes sustainable agriculture.
