The Place-Based Research Programme (2021-2027) is a key initiative within AHRC’s programme of research investment and knowledge exchange focused on place. Place is an important focus for current and future government research and development strategy. Place is also a research topic at the heart of many arts and humanities disciplines, from archaeology and architecture to history and literature.
The programme advances people-centred, place-based approaches defined as being able to "hold the lived, felt, geographic, and economic dimensions of place together to ensure that policies and practices are developed in equitable partnerships with individuals, communities, and professionals in ways that can achieve improved socio-economic outcomes for people and place".
The programme catalyses research, supports knowledge exchange, and nurtures partnerships that can advance people-centred approaches to place-based work.
The Place-Based Research Programme is designed to:
1. Build a programme around new and existing investments in place-based research and knowledge exchange
2. Support partnership working to ensure that the arts and humanities are well represented throughout place-based policies and practices
3. Learn from and share best practices at local, national, and international levels
4. Foster, with partners, a people-centred, place-based approach
In Phase 1 (2021-2023), we worked with nine Knowledge Exchange projects across the UK, designed to improve access to arts and humanities research expertise with a view to informing and supporting local regeneration.
In Phase 2 (2023-2027), cross-sector partnerships with national and international organisations and networks are helping us create the conditions for advancing people-centred approaches to place.
Our latest report introduces the concept of felt experience – the emotional and embodied ways we relate to place – as a crucial ingredient to secure improved socio-economic outcomes for people and places.
