科技部為營造創新人工智慧生態體系，打造國際級AI創新研究中心，達成研發尖端技術、培養領導人才、提升研發成果商業化之潛力衍生AI新創公司之目的，經過公開中心研究計劃徵求評審，於2018年1月1日在臺灣設立4個AI創新研究中心。
在國立臺灣大學的AI創新研究中心，全名為人工智慧技術暨全幅健康照護聯合研究中心，簡稱台大人工智慧中心或台大AI中心，包括智慧技術和生技醫療兩個主題、人工智慧技術及全幅健康照護兩個子中心。
