AITHER

In the AITHER project, a miniaturized onboard data processing unit based on COTS is to be developed primarily for future computing-intensive applications in the field of artificial intelligence. The onboard architecture should be able to take on both highly reliable and very computationally intensive tasks. The design is to be optimized specifically for use in small satellites with a mass of 10 to 100 kg (nano and micro satellites). To this end, a technology demonstrator is to be developed and tolerance to radiation effects such as proton and gamma rays are to be determined by space environment tests. Radiation protection (shielding) and thermal management should be given special consideration in the design. Modern neural networks for object classification or image compression are to be demonstrated as an AI application. These applications have a high potential to relieve the downlink and thus increase the efficiency of earth observation and communication missions.
