After successfully treating hundreds of patients using a month-over-month recurring revenue model in as many as 27 states during the pandemic, Alcure wrapped up its business in August of 2023.
For aspiring entrepreneurs, here are three key lessons:
1. Start Lean
Skip hiring developers and marketers in the beginning. You don't need them. Instead, create a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) yourself using no-code tools and follow the Lean Startup Methodology of rapidly iterating your product to find product-market fit. Build it in a few days and continue to iterate, focusing on essentials like a clean landing page, payment processor, forms, and a scheduling tool. All of these are now widely available to anyone with a modicum of tech skills, and the cost for each is negligible.
2. Be Aware of Online Platform and Legal Restrictions
Alcure was an ambitious project in that we offered medication-assisted treatment to people facing excess drinking issues. In other words, we were categorized as an addiction medicine service, which is a heavily regulated industry.
In starting out, consider avoiding industries with tight regulations. For example, with addiction medicine, major search engines like Google place special requirements on running ads as do popular social media platforms like Meta and LinkedIn. This will increase your operating costs and slow your progress and distribution efforts. Aim for easier markets where you can advertise freely.
Also, telehealth faces federal and state-mandated legal restrictions, such as medical privacy laws and state-specific medical licensing requirements for the doctors you'll hire. A thicket of legal regulations will add cost and impede growth.
3. Know When to Fold or Sell
Carefully evaluate when to double down or pivot, and understand that it's okay to quit or sell. Your gained experience will be priceless for future endeavors.
