AlgaeBrew is a research project with the objective to develop scalable processes that use microalgae (Nannochloropsis) to upgrade brewery wastewater and spent grain into high-value fatty acids to be used as a sustainable ingredient in the feed industry. The residual algae biomass after the fat extraction will be developed into biofertiliser to achieve a zero-waste goal. The project addresses technical challenges associated with algae cultivation on brewery waste, fatty acid extraction, feed formulation, and socio-economic analysis.
The consortium exists out of a partnership of excellent international researchers and a brewery and feed company. Together they aim to develop circular biobased solutions based on a zero waste principle.
Algaebrew receives financial support through the partners of the Joint Call of the Cofund ERA-NETs SUSFOOD2 (Grant N° 727473) and FOSC (Grant N° 862555).
