Investment Thesis
Water is the only commodity that is essential for life and not substitutable at any price. Nevertheless, the earth’s freshwater supply is now facing a “perfect storm” of secular trends, including a rising population that is migrating to the most arid parts of the world, rapidly growing consumption caused by an insatiable demand for water-intensive goods, and pollution at an unprecedented rate. The supply/demand imbalance is evidenced by 29 of the largest 32 freshwater aquifers in the world being depleted faster that they are replenished. Because the supply of rain is fixed, the world’s rising water demand has led to “a rush to drill” for many aquifers, with more wells and deeper pumping each year until some wells are completely tapped out.
Thus, we are unsustainably “borrowing” water from reserves at rates that are well above natural replenishment.
Investment Targets: “Unconventional” Water Supply
In the past few decades, nearly all regions of the world have passed the tipping point where “baseload” or “conventional” supply (i.e., easily accessed rain-gathering infrastructure) met demand. To avoid further “borrowing,” and meet growing demand, significant new supplies will need to come from unconventional new sources such as the ocean, reclamation and reuse, and improved consumption efficiencies. These non-conventional sources will come from rapidly-advancing technology innovations such as high efficiency desalination processes, low-energy desalination from the next generation of reverse osmosis nano-material membranes, smart water/big data, advanced sensors, leak detection and wireless monitoring, more “crops-per-drop” irrigation, water reuse infrastructure, and atmospheric generation, to name a few. Indeed, we expect that scarcity of our water resource will be “the mother of invention”, out of necessity.
Water and ESG Investing
While Alpheus invests for economic return typical of Series A and B stage venture capital investing (IRR target of 20%-30% with exits from four to six years), we believe that water will become the world’s most critical environmental, social and governance (“ESG”) issue in coming decades, similar to the global warming focus of the prior decade. In human terms, water scarcity and pollution lead to far more sickness and death than greenhouse gasses and C02. For society, water is the key lubricant for all energy (human carbohydrates, hydrocarbon or electrical) that allows for economic development. For governance, water rights have always been a source of conflict, both locally and internationally, and this trend will inevitably worsen in coming decades as scarcity exacerbates conflict.
