Eureka Co. Ltd. was one of the oldest M&A boutique founded by Yoko Fusa, ex-investment banker from Schroders (currently Citi Group) in 1998. Currently the firm has two rain makers based outside of Japan, Koji Fusa and Paul Edwards.
Each Professor Fusa and Mr. Edwards has significant role at NASDAQ listed SPACs in 2010s, as early SPAC sponsors. Professor Fusa is the Chairman of Eureka while Mr Edwards is a senior partner in the company. The company's President and CEO, Kazuhiro Ohasawa and senior partner Makoto Ishii both have impeccable track record as the creator of Japan's mezzanine finance market for large buy-outs out of Simitomo Mitsui Trust Capital.
Koji has four other significant roles outside of Eureka. He is Professor at Aston University's Cyber Security Innovation Centre since March 2021. Aston University was awarded the University of the Year by Guardian in November 2020. He is Special Strategic Advisor to the Oxford Vaccine Group since 2016. He is Executive Committee member for Ecma-International, standard development organization. He is CEO of GVE Ltd. a company he incubated 2017 as a part of his venture capital investment.
Mr Edwards lives in Cambridge. He was one of the early investors in Japanese public equities. He helped Professor Fusa to have made SBC Warburg (UBS) as the number one investment banking franchised in Japan in 1997 as a corner stone investor for SBC Warburg's first ever Japanese equity book-run deal for a Japanese public company. The $350 million deal was oversubscribed at 3x and the share price was doubled in 2 weeks from the closing.
Messrs. Ohsawa and Ishii started Chuo-Mitsui capital in 1990s. They have grown it as the largest mezzanine player in Japan and led the development of the market.
With the combination of different set of skills, Eureka is one of the most reputable M&A boutique investment bank in Japan.
