Globally, waste production is at the highest level yet and experts project that it will only increase. In Nairobi and Kiambu counties alone, an estimated 2500 tonnes of waste is generated everyday, 11% of which is plastic. This poses serious problems for urban poor communities often residing in slums without collection services, trash ends up everywhere including in waterways and food production areas. Plastics are the most challenging culprits to manage, since even in developed countries, recycling services are only able to process specific grades of plastic while the rest are sent directly to already overflowing landfills and dumpsites. We are working to change this. Alternative Energy Systems Limited (AESL) is constructing a pyrolysis plant in Kenya that will convert waste plastic into usable forms of energy. Our positive social impacts will be threefold—reducing plastic pollution, generating employment and producing a charcoal substitute from carbon black (a pyrolysis byproduct).
