Every year 100 ultra-orthodox soldiers draft into Chetz, the Chareidi Company in the 202nd Paratrooper Battalion of the IDF. These soldiers often have little to no support from their communities. In fact, it took only a year after the unit was created in 2016 for it to have more “lone-soldiers” (soldiers with no family support) than the entire Battalion combined. Despite this, Chetz was declared the Paratrooper’s “Most Outstanding Company of 2021.”
In response to what we experienced as former officers in Chetz, we established the Chetz Association as a platform to support these soldiers. Just over a year after its creation, we are pleased to announce that we have opened a lone-soldier house in Jerusalem for Chetz soldiers, established a big-brother mentoring program that connects our unit’s graduates to current soldiers, and are currently working on a program to support soldiers as they transition from the army and integrate into Israeli society. We have gone from a few friends to a team of 10 administrators and 25 mentors, and we currently support more than 200 soldiers.
