We think that if we learn enough skills and technical knowledge, we’ll be recognised and rewarded.
We might even believe that expertise will earn us respect.
Wrong.
Why expertise isn’t enough:
Okay, before I tell you why it’s wrong I will admit this – I like expertise as much as the next person. Incompetence drives me crazy.
So yes, expertise is a good baseline for filling your role. And it may get you further on in your career.
But it will not get you all the way.
And you may not enjoy the journey – if expertise is everything to you. Especially if expertise is everything to you.
There are many cases of talented experts being passed over for promotion and juicy projects. It always comes back the to the same thing:
They didn’t have the people-skills
How to move up and make a difference:
You know the 80/20 rule?
Then you’ll know that your job is only 20% your technical skills – and 80% people skills.
80% of your day is spent solving people-problems.. Problems created by people with… poor people-skills!
* People who misunderstand
* People who need informing
* People who need guidance
* People who are being emotional – but you have to deal with them
It’s only a few people who are actually out to make your day bad. Mostly, they’re just trying to survive and they don’t know any better.
You can know better. I know this because I’ve helped hundreds of people like you.
