A Story of The Joule
The makers of the “Joule”, South Africa’s first electric car in 2008, were well ahead of their time achieving what Elon Musk has mastered with the Tesla in recent years, but alas, a delayed investment opportunity.
In 2010, a small pilot fleet of Joules was manufactured in Port Elizabeth. The car was expected to be sold in South Africa as well as Europe from 2014, but production ceased in April 2012 after the founders, Optimal Energy failed to find a commercial partner.
There exists an opportunity for Africa to take its place as a global electric vehicle and EV-component production powerhouse if investors buy into the value-chain of the battery storage ecosystem.
