To avoid the occurrence of failures as much as possible, maintenance is carried out, with the maintenance strategy chosen often depending on the risks posed by an unplanned stoppage. The trade-off to be made concerns the balance between preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance. Preventive maintenance is always planned and done to prevent failures. Corrective maintenance is unplanned and is done to rectify any faults that have occurred as quickly as possible. The advantages of preventive maintenance are, of course, that everything can be planned in advance and that fewer breakdowns occur. The disadvantage, however, is that it is relatively expensive: undoubtedly you will also replace parts at a time when this is not at all necessary. How nice would it be if you only performed preventive maintenance when it was really necessary? This is possible with predictive maintenance.
