Applied Geoinformatics

Applied Geoinformatics 🗺️ is a research division among the Department of Geography at the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography - Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NIGGG-BAS), Sofia, Bulgaria. 📍Renamed in 2025, the division was first established in 2010 under the name of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) division. Main research areas and activities: - 🛰️ Remote sensing; - 🗺️ Application of GIS-based tools for modelling various aspects of the environment, landscape and ecosystem services studies; - 💾 Development and maintenance of spatial databases, including for Bulgaria, through advanced geoinformation technologies for cartographic visualization and creation of map products; - ✅ Scientific support for environmental monitoring and for informed management decision-making in relation to regional development, planning and governance; - 🤝 Applying extensive experience in European scientific projects and maintaining close collaboration with international organizations such as ESP and IPBES; - 🧑🏻🏫 Specialized training and courses in GIS, remote sensing, ecosystem services, and scientific publishing. More than 20 years of experience on the ecosystem services research, and partnering in EU, NATO, and Biodiversa+ funded projects like ESMERALDA, MAIA, SELINA, TransWILD, Restore4Life, etc.
