Applied Immunogenetics Laboratory (API) is a distinguished leader in histocompatibility and immunogenetics. Established in 2019 under the visionary leadership of Dr. M. Sue Leffell and Dr. Andrea A. Zachary, API has made significant contributions to developing pioneering desensitization protocols that have gained global recognition.
Our Immunogenetics Laboratory specializes in clinical histocompatibility testing and immunologic monitoring, offering invaluable support for solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Beyond our clinical services, our laboratory researches transplantation immunology, immunogenetics, and population genetics and supports other related fields.
At API, we harness the expertise of our dedicated IT team to maintain a cutting-edge computer system that underpins laboratory operations and houses a comprehensive database encompassing all conducted tests, including those related to transplant procedures. We extend our reach to the broader medical community by offering outreach services to dialysis units and patients through our highly skilled API technologists.
Every member of the API laboratory technician team brings a wealth of experience from their prior tenure at JHU, boasting a minimum of 10 years of invaluable experience and holding the highest HLA certification (CHS). Our laboratory is at the forefront of clinical testing for solid organs, proudly serving one of the nation's largest transplant centers, INOVA, in Virginia.
API operates as a 24/7 facility, with our dedicated technologists tirelessly conducting organ compatibility testing whenever needed, ensuring that patients receive the critical support they require at any time of the day.
