Planet earth has more plastic waste (around 4900 Mt or million metric tons), than the total mass of the animal kingdom ~2589 Mt! The most common method of recycling plastic is by mechanical process followed by chemical or thermal. In the mechanical process, plastic waste is either converted to other articles of downgraded quality or downcycled to polyester for the textile industry. Other methods require use of either chemicals or high temperatures. Manufacturing of plastic itself contributes to the pollution, it is estimated that 4% of global oil is used for plastic production. It is impossible for human civilization to completely stop using or even to reduce plastic usage. Therefore it is more important we have an efficient close-loop recycling system which can put the plastic back for commercial use without compromising on the quality of the recycled product at the same time not polluting the environment and simultaneously reducing or completely eliminating the need to derive them from crude oil. The most popular existing technologies can only satisfy a maximum of two of these constraints. One such effort is under process at "Apratima Biosolutions" wherein we are devising an eco-friendly, energy efficient, low carbon footprint technology to degrade plastic waste into its building blocks, which can again be used to make new virgin quality polymer. We use powerful tools provided by Mother nature and AI! This is our first step towards the ultimate solution to make our environment free from plastic or other pollutants, and create a healthy and safe environment for life on the planet.
