The name ‘ArchXR’ combines two elements: • ‘Arch’ is short for archaeology and architecture; • XR means Extended Reality – encompassing Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality. ArchXR is an independent Romanian startup company, based in Bucharest, focused on developing XR projects in the photorealistic visualization of (1) archaeological heritage sites as they used to look like in the past and (2) current architectural projects/sites. ArchXR has a strategic alliance with two independent partners based in the UK: the Virtual Centre for Late Antiquity (VCLA) and Untold Histories Travel Ltd. The VCLA is a non-profit academic research centre specializing in the history of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East from about 150 to 750 CE. In addition to its academic programme, the VCLA conducts original in-house research to develop 3D reconstructions of archaeological sites. ArchXR and the VCLA then coordinate to turn these models into realistic visualizations that can serve a variety of markets across education, heritage, tourism (both on location and virtual) and creative industries. Go-to-market strategy for the tourism industry in particular is handled, in turn, by Untold Histories.
