I'm a research academic and company founder. As a founder, I have both non-profit and commercial interests. I focus on the creation and (where relevant) commercialization of IP.1. AcademicI'm a historian of Late Antiquity - the period from about 200 to 700 CE, when the ancient world in western Eurasia and northern Africa was transformed into the medieval world. This period saw the fall of the Roman and Persian empires, the rise of Christianity and Islam, and major social and economic change. In addition to my academic research, which has appeared in leading journals, I'm interested in the public understanding of the past.2. Non-profit founderI instigated the founding of an independent non-profit research centre in my field, the Virtual Centre for Late Antiquity (VCLA). The Centre carries out in-house historical and archaeological research, currently focusing on digital reconstructions (3D modelling) of what historical sites used to look like. This is intended, in the first instance, for scholarly presentation at conferences and by publication, and for the support of teaching.3. Commercial founderWhere relevant, the VCLA collaborates with ArchXR Digital Studios in joint content creation, the latter supplying additional expertise in digital modelling and photorealistic visualization. The resulting product has prospective applications that include but go beyond the education sector. Current workflow focuses on tourism on-location through Untold Histories Travel and its local inbound partners. Other prospective pipelines include heritage, virtual tourism and the creative industries. I am the instigator of both ArchXR and Untold Histories.I divide my time between Romania, Italy, my native UK and international travel.

This was a lovely team of people to be part of: friendly and vibrant. Before that (2010-11), I was a Senior Data Manager in the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, also in Birmingham, where confidential and statutorily regulated data handling was also basic to the role. This post came with the added interest of being based in two hospitals, working with Research Nurses and Consultants, and frequently encountering patients (with the benefit, of course, of a clean bill of legal health via what was then known as a Criminal Records Bureau check). Not unrelated, but from a different angle, I also worked (2007-8) in Regulatory Operations at a pharmaceutical company in Windsor - Pharmion, subsequently acquired by Celgene - which was focusing on a portfolio of cancer drugs. My role was heavily geared around the production and management of documents, some of which were then submitted for European regulatory approval. I recall a couple of bonuses for my humble part in some of this. Thalidomide was on the list, which was particularly interesting. And I was sent on trips to Boulder and Amsterdam, which provided enjoyable interludes. Show less
