About Armitt Library and Museum Centre
Founded in 1912 by Mary Louisa Armitt, our collection reflects the social history of Ambleside in the wider context of the development of the Lake District. Our collection includes Beatrix Potter's fungi watercolours, the archive of Charlotte Mason and the House of Education, Kurt Schwitters' collages and paintings, artefacts from the Ambleside Roman Fort, and over 10,000 books on the Lake District and Cumbria.
