Active RoofTops South Europe (aRTes)

aRTes is an innovation project funded by the Driving Urban Transitions (DUT) programme, aiming to unlock the potential of rooftops as transformative urban infrastructure. In many Southern European cities, rooftops remain an underutilized asset, despite favorable climates and vibrant urban cultures. These elevated spaces offer significant opportunities to boost sustainability and resilience by serving as insulative surfaces, green open areas, and community hubs. Rooftops can help lower carbon emissions, reduce the urban heat island effect, and manage stormwater runoff. They can also host biodiversity, urban farming, social activities, and even drone-based logistics, generating new business opportunities and enhancing city life. Aligned with the European Renovation Wave and New European Bauhaus, the aRTes consortium is working across Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, and Cyprus to reimagine rooftop use.
