For 10+ years I have worked alongside engineers, manufacturers, scientists and doctors to take complex hardware challenges and turn them into devices that perform and are enjoyable to use. Today, I consult for start-ups and engineering teams developing the next generation of products in healthcare, manufacturing and climate technology.
For example, I worked with a manufacturer of high temp. 3D Printers on their new flagship model. They wanted a more approachable design, one which balanced functional needs with those of cost and human factors. I met with stakeholders from engineering, material sciences, production and sales to re-imagine an architecture that addressed these competing priorities. On the exterior effective design (and some new mfg. methods I introduced) resulted in a distinct visual identity at a lower cost.
For another team of scientists and engineers tackling greenhouse gases, a design sprint explored various architectures for their technology. By visualizing different form factors early on, they were able to make decisions in a larger context, and “break the anchor” that the layout of their functional prototypes had formed in the team’s minds.
