ARTIMATION is an EU funded project that is part of SESAR JU framework of Exploratory Research, aiming at modernise Europe’s air traffic management system. The project focus is to provide a transparent AI model that will enhance automationin the ATM field, the AI model has to be explainable, that is, it will provide informationregarding its choices when inquired on certain decision-making choices. Furthermore, ARTIMATION will also develop a Human/Machine interface which will adaptitself and its “levels of Explanation” based on the analysis of selected physiological parameters. Simply put,
ARTIMATION AI will deduce from ATC operator’s biometrics how much information it must show and which ones are are better to be left out. This concept will facilitate ATM operations for operators, as they would not need to scrutinize huge quantity of information that machines provide for every operation but will only be fed the relevant ones by the AI, although operators will be able to demand more information at any time.
ARTIMATION's objective is to provide an ATM solution based on Explainable Artifical Intelligence that is human-centric and helps ATCOs, simplifying or providing more extensive informations on a given operation. The AI should discern when and how information has to be given to ATCO, based on data-driven storytelling, immersive analytics and visualisation. #Transparency is key, as the AI has to be explainable in its decisions provide reasoning for its actions.
ARTIMATION needs a conceptual framework for building human-centric Explainable AI based on extensive ATM data review, which also will allow to predict air traffic and optimise its flow. This will improve the functionality, acceptability and trustworthiness of AI systems in general, but also leading to fulfillment of global goals such as improvement of industry, innovation and infrastructure in society.
