Sustainable Development is one of ASEF’s seven key thematic areas. In this field, we engage civil society, governments, and businesses on national, regional, and international levels to build capacity on sustainability-related issues. We organise workshops, dialogue platforms, and knowledge hub meetings that produce research on the state of sustainability in Asia and Europe.
We align our work with the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and contribute to the global debate on climate change through the ASEM Process. Our flagship programme is the Asia-Europe Environment Forum (ENVforum). Established in 2003, it aims to contribute to the formulation of sound decisions across all sectors that are mindful of their environmental, social and economic impacts and of the future generations. In doing so, we foster inter-regional cooperation between Asia and Europe on areas of sustainable development and climate change.
