Founded in 1897, Athletics Essendon is one of the most successful track & field and cross country clubs in Australia. The club has the proud honour of having representatives at the past 15 consecutive Olympic and Commonwealth Games.
In recent years, the club has been renowned for its exemplary results at both the Victorian and Australian Track & Field Championships. It has also seen vast international success; having excellent representation at the World Athletics Championships, World Para Athletics Championships, World Athletics Cross Country Championships, World Athletics U20 Championships, IAAF Continental Cup, Diamond League and Universiade.
Athletics Essendon has won the prestigious H. H. Hunter Memorial Shield 20 times, 12 of which have occurred since 2000, with the most recent win in 2023 The shield is named after Herbert Humphreys Hunter, Captain of the 7th. Battalion 1st. Division A.I.F, and is awarded to the best overall team performance at the Victorian Track and Field Championships.
