About Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO)

The Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO) promotes the language professions and the value of certification as a means to protect the public interest. OUR VISION To ensure that language professionals are certified and available to provide quality language services in all languages throughout Ontario. OUR HISTORY ATIO is the oldest organization of translators, conference interpreters, court interpreters, terminologists, community interpreters and medical interpreters in Canada. It was founded in 1920 as the l'Association technologique de langue française d’Ottawa (the French Language Technology Association of Ottawa), and incorporated the following year under Ontario Letters Patent. In 1962 the Association adopted its current name. We are the first translators’ association in the world whose certified members are deemed professionals by law, for in February 1989 the Province of Ontario granted reserved title for certified members of ATIO through the Association of Translators and Interpreters Act, 1989. The main purpose of the Association is to promote a high level of competence in translation, terminology and interpretation. OUR OBJECTIVES - Provide a collective voice for our members - Promote the professional development of its members - Ensure that our members exercise high standards of ethical conduct - Publicize the role performed by our members in society - Establish standards of competency and certification examinations and to monitor the quality of the professional services rendered by our members - Examine any complaints received that pertain to the competence or professional conduct of a member - Support and protect the collective status, dignity and integrity of professional translators, interpreters and terminologists - Provide our members with services designed to meet their professional needs - Maintain amicable and professional relations with similar organizations inside and outside Canada.
