Seaweed, which is classified as a type of algae, has been used all over the world for thousands of years. Since ancient times this wild and natural resource has been foraged from rocks and beach coastlines the world over for use as an important food source and aid to healing.
For thousands of years seaweed has been used by humans for many different purposes. Algae came into existence about 3.5 billion years ago and creates 75% of the air we breathe.
There are over 6000 types of seaweed. Some are suitable for human consumption or cosmetics and pharmaceutical purposes. Since the 18th century over 500 different species of seaweed / algae have been identified around the shores of Ireland.

Records indicate that in Ireland people started collecting seaweed or sea vegetables for a thousand years. This ideal environment is due to large amounts of dissolved salts, nutrients and minerals from in-flowing rivers and rich tidal up-welling from the Atlantic Ocean, producing the best quality seaweed in the world.
