Automous

Automous® is an Aalto University spinoff from 6 years of deep tech research on electricity market price forecasting, energy asset modelling and optimal scheduling and cross-market bidding of energy assets. During our time in the IT in Automation group, Electrical Engineering and Automation dept., we have investigated numerous AI and non-AI technologies, which we combine to achieve the best fit with the customer problem, considering the availability of relevant data. At this time we have commercialized OptiBid®, a cross-market optimizer for grid-scale battery storages, using electricity price forecasts from our ElePrice® system. We consider both Nord Pool or EPEX markets and ancillary markets, as well as other co-located assets such as photovoltaic generation. OptiBid® considers battery status, market price forecasts, and generation/consumption forecasts for co-located assets. It outputs a bidding plan for all of the markets. Usually, our customers submit the bids themselves or via a 3rd party, but we can also bring such a 3rd party if needed. Our goal is to maximize the total revenue from all the markets, considering constraints and penalties related to battery aging, grid fees, and taxes. During 2024/2025, we see a major disruption in the European marketplace, as the secondary frequency reserve (aFRR) markets in most countries move to the PICASSO standard. Based on the aFRR price levels in countries that are currently in PICASSO, participation is highly profitable. We are well positioned to support customers moving to PICASSO. During our time at Aalto University, we prototyped green energy sites with batteries and various non-schedulable loads and generation resources, namely wind and solar. This part of our work has currently been commercialized in OptiBid®. We also prototyped sector-integration extensions related to heat and green hydrogen. In 2024 we will productize our optimizer for industrial scale electric boilers.
