Our inspiration: the back forty We discovered the phrase “back forty” in Landmarks, a wonderful book about the language of landscapes (read it, it’s great). A colloquial phrase for the distant part of a farm or ranch, “the back forty” originated with the Homestead Act of 1862, which granted 160 acres of land to anyone willing to farm it for at least five years. Those 160 acres were typically divided into two “front forty” parcels, the more accessible plots, and two “back forty” sections, which took more time and effort to cultivate. So the back forty became our inspiration. Every landscape, every city, every community, every project, has a back forty: a space that takes vision and grit to transform. We welcome those spaces, integrating them alongside their “front forty” counterparts into holistic designs that make the most of every opportunity. From a pocket park or plaza to a marquis streetscape, an amenity courtyard to a scene-stealing roof deck, we cultivate places that people relish and remember.
