BACKLIT is an independent public gallery and cultural organisation based in Nottingham, founded in 2008 by local graduates.

We support artists at all stages of their careers through exhibitions, affordable studios, professional development, and public programmes. Our three-storey gallery is housed in a historic Victorian building and home to over 120 artists, collectives, and associate members.
Over the past 14 years, we’ve delivered more than 100 national and international exhibitions and built a reputation for bold, inclusive, and socially engaged programming. Our free year-round events include workshops, talks, screenings, and original artist commissions.
As a female-led and LGBTQ+ organisation, we prioritise equity, inclusion, mental health, environmental awareness, and being a safe space for all.
