Balanced Bites

Balanced Bites, founded in 2023, emerged from my deep passion for biology and nutrition. My concern grew as I observed nutritional challenges among children in rural India, where, according to the Hindustan Times, 7.7% of children—around 4.3 million—were malnourished in 2023, with 1.4 million severely affected. During my internship with the Access Life Foundation in Mumbai, I noticed a critical knowledge gap in children's nutrition choices. This disparity compelled me to take action. Balanced Bites was created to address malnutrition in India by educating children, parents, and young adults about proper nutrition. We initiated this mission through workshops at various NGOs. These sessions included presentations on vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, tailored to each age group. To enhance learning, we incorporated interactive activities such as flashcards and garden workshops. In some cases, children engage in planting small seedlings, connecting nutrition to agriculture. Additionally, we provide personalized food kits to the children and young adults at these NGOs. Each kit, containing items like fruits, granola bars, or nuts, is tailored to the needs of the specific organization. These kits not only offer nutritious snacks but also serve as educational tools to demonstrate what balanced eating looks like. Balanced Bites also conducts specialized food creation workshops. These sessions, led by chefs or nutritionists who volunteer their time, teach children how to prepare nutritious snacks and meals using non-gas cooking methods. Recipes for salads and sandwiches are among the skills taught, empowering children to cook independently. Our ultimate goal is to support underprivileged communities in India by providing them with the knowledge and tools needed to make informed nutritional choices, thereby contributing to a reduction in malnutrition rates.
