Baltic Earth

Baltic Earth is an international research network dedicated to understanding the Earth system in the Baltic Sea region. It brings together scientists to study climate change, extreme events, biogeochemical cycles, and human impacts through an interdisciplinary approach. Baltic Earth operates through specialized working groups (BEWG), focusing on key research topics such as salinity dynamics, carbon cycling, coupled climate modeling, and regional climate projections. These groups foster collaboration, integrate knowledge, and support sustainable development and informed decision-making. The network is coordinated by the International Baltic Earth Secretariat (IBES) and guided by the Baltic Earth Science Steering Group (BESSG) and the Baltic Earth Senior Advisory Board (BESAB), which provide strategic direction and scientific leadership. Regional and thematic BEWGs further support its activities, ensuring strong scientific coordination and outreach. The International Baltic Earth Secretariat (IBES), serving as the focal support point for Baltic Earth, is currently located at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon in Geesthacht, Germany. At the beginning of 2025, IBES will transition to a co-hosted model, jointly managed by the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research in Warnemünde, Germany, and the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot, Poland.
